3 WAYS TO KONMARI YOUR HOME WITHOUT SPENDING ANY MONEY

Simplicity & Coffee. The two things that help me create order and space in my otherwise hectic life as a wife/mom/friend/business owner/writer/designer/cook/housekeeper/dog groomer/etc. While coffee is easy to come by (thank you G for tolerating and enjoying the four different ways I have in the house to make coffee!), simplicity is more of an art - a daily balancing act between allowing enough chaos to be present in the moment and creating enough order that I don't feel buried beneath the to-do's.

One way I've found to create simplicity that sticks is through organization. When everything has a place to go, it's much easier to tidy up and have spaces that remain visually uncluttered (two things that give me emotional breathing room). Fortunately, there are so many ways to simplify and organize that don't involve spending any money. Here are three of my favorites to get you started:

1) FOLD YOUR CLOTHES 3x3

This is one I stole straight from Marie Kondo. Take your shirt/underware/etc and fold it in thirds lengthwise. Now fold it in thirds widthwise. They take up less space, are more uniform in size, and I find they wrinkle less when they're smaller too. Here's a great video showing how to fold all sorts of items:

2) GET EVERYTHING OUT OF IT'S PACKAGING

I find this helps me so much, especially in the kitchen. I like to have everything out where I can see it. If you have tupperware, clear bins, or baskets, this is a great way to use them. If not, I find even cutting the tops off the boxes things came in so you can see them is helpful! I found my favorite storage containers at Target. I love how sleek and simple they are, and that they don't have the pop-seal (I invested a lot of $$ in the Oxo ones, and many of them have broken over the years. The Target type won't since there's no mechanics).

3) COLOR COODINATE

Do this with everything! Books, clothes, shoes, folded linens... the list goes on and on. Anything you can organize by color will appear structured (even if it's not really any more organized than before!). For me, since I don't really like color, I took it a step further and covered all our books with muslin cloth and stamped the names on the cover using black ink and typewriter letters. One of my favorite DIY projects so far.

If you are looking to add some organizational items to your home, Target has my favorites right now. These chic boxes have the prettiest grey or blush lids and cost less than $6 for a set of five. You can also pick up these dividers that fit perfectly in them for $2. They come in a variety of sizes/shapes and are so versatile. Finally, here is a link to that kitchen storage system again. They hold all our snacks so well, and I love how they look in our cabinets. I bet they'd work great for crafting or bathroom storage too!

I also think this is a great time to go through our closets and do a clean-out, but I'll devote a whole post to that later things month! Do you guys have any suggestions for ways to organize without spending $$? I'd love to hear them! Send me at DM over at instagram.com/simplicityandcoffee
